Where do I place the refuse containers on collection day?: Containers should be placed on the house side of the curb or in the alley.

1. What if my collection day falls on a holiday?: Collection is not provided on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. If one of these holidays falls on or before your scheduled pickup day, including Sunday, collection is delayed one day for the remainder of the week. If garbage pickup is usually on Thursday, pickup will be on Friday. Residents with Friday Pickup will receive garbage and recycling pickup service on Saturday.

2. Can I get a smaller cart?: Seniors (62 years and older) will have the option of choosing a 35 gallon refuse and recycle cart size instead of the 95 gallon and 65 gallon sizes after a 60 day trial period.

3. Where do I dispose of bulk items?: Residents may place bulk items out for collection on their pickup day. Niles residents receive unlimited collection of bulk items. Residents are encouraged to only place out one bulk item per week if possible to assist the collector, and to contact Groot to arrange for the pickup of the bulk item(s).These items must be of a manageable size that can be safely collected by one Groot collector. Bulk items include, but are not limited to: beds, box springs, mattresses, sofas, furniture, furnishings, fixtures, and White Goods (appliances). Please note that Groot requests that residents call them at (800) 244-1977 in advance for all White Goods placed out for collection. Groot only collects one free bulk item per week.
* There is an extra charge if items are very heavy or large like sleeper/recliner sofas, big armoires and entertainment centers. These are considered a special pickup and residents have to call Groot to arrange the pickup and set up payment.
**Large bulk items that require two or more people to safely lift include: pianos, hot tubs, large sofas, and bath tubs.

4. What if my garbage isn’t picked up?: If your garbage is not picked up, please contact Niles Public Services at 847-588-7900.

5. Where can I buy yard waste stickers?: Yard waste stickers can be purchased for $2.00 per sticker at The Village of Niles (1000 Civic Center Drive, Oakton and Waukegan), Senior Center (999 Civic Center Drive, Oakton and Waukegan), and at the Jewel Stores (5667 Touhy Ave and 7900 Milwaukee Ave).

6. What day is garbage pickup?: Single family collections occur on Thursday and Friday. You can find your garbage pickup day on the map and the schedule provided on the Village’s website.

7. How often will I have a collection day?: Refuse and recycling are collected once per week.

8. What time can I put out the garbage?: It should be placed on the house side of the curb or in the alley no earlier than 5:00 pm the night before. Hours of collection are 6:00 am - 7:00 pm. The Village has allowed residents with alleys to leave garbage in the alley within 24 hours of pickup as long as it is in covered containers.

9. What do I put my garbage in?: Each residence was provided with a 95 gallon refuse cart and 65 gallon recycling cart in August 2014. All garbage and recycling should be placed in their respective carts. DO NOT place garbage in small grocery store bags or plastic garbage bags and place them out for collection. The Village requires placing garbage in cans or carts. Bags are easily torn and ravaged by animals which creates public health and littering concerns.

10. If an item doesn’t fit into my container, how do I dispose of it?: Residents receive unlimited garbage collection on their scheduled pick-up day, so items that do not fit into your refuse containers can be placed next to the containers on the curb.

11. Is there a limit to the size of my garbage pickup?: Yes; Groot enforces approximately 50 lbs. and 6 ft. in length per item. However, you can have an unlimited number of items or containers.

12. How do I dispose of large appliances?: Residents may place appliances out for collection on their pickup day. Please note that Groot requests that residents call them at (800) 244-1977 in advance for all White Goods placed out for collection. White Goods include, but are not limited to: stoves, ovens, washing machines, dryers, air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, water softeners, water heaters, trash compactors, and dishwashers

13. Can I put a couch out for pickup?: Yes, you may place bulk items out for collection on their pickup day. Please note that there is an extra charge if items are very heavy or large like sleeper/recliner sofas, big armoires and entertainment centers. These are considered a special pickup and residents have to call Groot to arrange the pickup and set up payment.

14. How do I get rid of construction waste?: Residents with waste such as earth, sod, rocks, concrete, rubble, waste from remodeling, construction and demolition of buildings, excavations and other similar materials must contact Groot for a special pick-up. Residents may order a dumpster. Information on renting a roll-off for large projects is available on SWANCC’s website at swancc.org.

16. How do I dispose of household hazardous waste such as paint and motor oil?: Illinois law prohibits the disposal of certain waste in landfills. The following items will not be collected by Groot: electronic waste, automobile tires, automobile batteries, explosives and volatile waste, flammable waste, gasoline, motor oil, similar automobile fluids, toxic and hazardous waste, acids and poisons and unhardened paint.
