Village receives $475,000 grant from Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky for Milwaukee Avenue revitalization.
Acting Mayor Robert Callero, Trustee Louella Preston and Trustee Andrew Przybylo met with Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky to personally thank her for securing $475,000 in federal funding for the community’s ongoing Milwaukee Avenue Revitalization project.
“This is great news,” exclaimed Acting Mayor Bob Callero. “Milwaukee Avenue is a State of Illinois roadway and a regional corridor, so it has always been our goal to accomplish this project with as little Village funds as possible. The federal grant from Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky will go a long way to creating a more transit and pedestrian friendly climate within this corridor. She continues to do all she can for the Village of Niles.”
To date, the Village of Niles has received $1,395,000 in grants for the Milwaukee Avenue Revitalization Project since 2005.
“I think what is most important about this ongoing revitalization effort is that it has been planned in an open and transparent manner,” stated Acting Mayor Callero. “Since the project began in 2005 there have been open public meetings and workshops every step of the way because community input and buy-in is key to project success.”
In addition, the delegation discussed stimulus funding, shovel ready projects, and stormwater flooding issues. “With these projects we have ready,” stated Callero, “we are attempting to receive stimulus funds from the federal government and the Illinois Department of Transportation.”
