At their annual Awards Gala at the Fountain Blue in Des Plaines, the United Hellenic Voters of America (UHVA) honored their 2022 Persons of the Year and Most-Distinguished Greek-Americans. Village of Niles Mayor George D. Alpogianis was honored at the Gala with the “Mayor of the Year” Award. Mayor Alpogianis was selected by the United Hellenic Voters of America for his exemplary service and commitment to the people of the Village of Niles. Mayor Alpogianis thanked his family, Niles residents, the Board of Trustees, Village Staff, and the United Hellenic Voters of America Supreme Board. Mayor Alpogianis also congratulated his fellow honorees, including Secretary of State Jesse White, who received the UHVA’s “Lifetime Achievement” award, and Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives Emanuel “Chris” Welch, who was named “Person of the Year.”
“It was a humbling honor to stand alongside these two great guys,” said Alpogianis, “and I could not have done this without the support of the entire community, as well as the Village Board and staff.”
The Gala was tribute to the legacy of Dr. Dimitrios Kyriazopoulos, the founding father of the UHVA, who passed away in 2020 just shy of his 90th birthday. The motto of the United Hellenic Voters of America is “People. Not Party.”—bringing together those in government from both sides of the aisle in celebration of the honorees and community leaders.
