[ARCHIVED] Electronics Recycling

On Saturday, June 29th, the Village of Niles will host an electronics recycling and document shredding event at Niles Public Works, 6849 W. Touhy Avenue, from 9 a.m. to noon.  Residents from Niles and other SWANCC communities are eligible to participate. Materials will not be accepted from non-SWANCC residents, businesses, schools, or institutions, and IDs will be checked for verification of residency - http://www.swancc.org/swancc-member-communities.

About Paper

Workers will remove the paper documents while residents stay their vehicles. Paper is cross-shredded on site and will be recycled at a mill to make new paper products. Only sensitive documents are accepted; that can include medical forms, bank statements, personal files and retired tax forms. There is a limit of six (6) file boxes or paper bags per vehicle, and plastic and metal clips or binders must be removed.

DO NOT bring paper in plastic bags. Plastic is a contaminant, as are photos, slides, and any non-paper item. DO NOT include magazines, greeting cards or newspapers, as these can be recycled curbside.

About Electronics:

Please remove electronics from plastic packaging and boxes prior to bringing to a SWANCC event.

  • Acceptable Materials: Cable Receivers, Cell Phones, Computer Cables, Computer Monitors, Computers (Desktop, Notebook, Tablet), Converter Boxes, Desktop Fax Machines and Printers, Keyboards, Mice, MP3 Players, Portable Digital Assistants (PDAs), Satellite Receivers, Scanners, Televisions, Video Game Consoles, Video Recorders/Players and Zip Drives.
  • Items NOT Accepted: Stereos, Speakers, Batteries or Battery Back-ups, Air Conditioners, Dehumidifiers, Humidifiers, Home Appliances, Lamps, Microwaves, Vacuum Cleaners, Refrigerators or other large home appliances; and CDs, DVDs or VHS tapes.

“SWANCC provides a variety of Special Material Programs to assist its residents with the task of recycling banned electronics and other materials that are potentially harmful or have recoverability, so they can be managed properly and made into new products when possible,” stated Mary Allen, SWANCC Recycling and Education Director.
