[ARCHIVED] UPDATE: Smoke Testing of Sewers

Update, 10/19/2017:

Due to great productivity and efficiency during last week's planned smoke testing, the Village of Niles has the ability to test another neighborhood, further ensuring our sewer system is in good working order. The sanitary sewers in the neighborhood bound by Harts, Riverside, and Touhy will be smoke tested next Monday, October 23. Niles staff members are distributing notices to affected properties this week.

Original Alert:

Niles’ Public Services and Hey & Associates staff will be performing smoke testing of select sanitary sewers next week.  Work is scheduled for October 9-13, weather and equipment permitting. Notices have been distributed to affected properties.

The “smoke” is non-toxic, non-staining, odorless, and creates no fire hazard.  It should not enter a home unless there is defective plumbing or dried drain traps.  We advise residents to pour a gallon of water into their drain traps prior to testing.  People are encouraged to call Hey & Associates at (262) 366-5879 if they have a respiratory problem or if smoke enters their home.

We will begin smoke testing in “Test Area 1” on Monday and work our way through Area 4 as the week progresses.  Only public sewer mains will be directly tested, so Golf Mill and the private sanitary sewers east of Milwaukee Ave will not be tested.  Please see the maps and FAQ document below for additional information.
