Staffing, Stations & Apparatus

Of the 49 sworn personnel, 15 will be assigned per shift (with a minimum manning of 13) for both stations. There is also one district chief assigned per shift. The code 3 assignment is as follows:
  • 2 engines
  • 1 truck
  • 2 ambulances
  • 1 battalion
The code 4 assignment or still alarm is as follows:
  • 4 engines
  • 3 trucks
  • 1 squad
  • 2 ambulances
  • 3 battalions
The Niles Public Services Department maintains all village vehicles. There are SCBA-certified technicians at both fire stations: the service shop is at Station #2, and the air compressor is at Station #3.

Fire Station #2
Niles Fire Department station #2 is located at 8360 Dempster Street. It is the location of the fire department headquarters.

Equipment

Station #2 is outfitted with two fire engines (one on reserve), one paramedic unit, and the lone fire truck.

​Fire Engine #2
Engine #2 is a 2013 six-seat air conditioned Pierce Dash CF PUC 1250 gallon per minute pumper. Tank capacity of 500 gallons of water with a Husky 12 single agent foam system pre-piped into all pre-connected lines with 20 gallon class A foam tank. The engine is powered by Detroit DDC DD13 and a Gen IV 4000 EVS Allison transmission. All engines are equipped with a generator and lights. Hose loads include:
  • 1000 feet of four inch hose in rear bed along with a front 150 feet pre-connected hydrant line
  • 1000 feet of 2 1/2 inch hose
  • Two 200 foot, 1 3/4 inch pre-connected attack lines
  • Two 100 foot, 1 3/4 inch pre-connected trash lines
This engine is equipped with a Onan 7.5kW diesel generator.

The reserve engine (Engine #2R) is a 1992 Pierce with a 1250 gallon per minute pumper equipped with a 500 gallon tank powered by a Detroit diesel with Allison transmission. The same hose arrangement as the front line unit is utilized.

Truck #2
The only fire truck (Truck #2) is a 1998 Pierce Lance 105 foot aerial mounted on a straight frame. The unit features a six-seat air conditioned cab powered by a Detriot diesel and Allison transmission. Equipped with two Genesis powered units used with an assortment rams, spreaders, and cutters. The truck also is equipped with the following:
  • Two blowers used for ventilation
  • Four gas powered saws
  • Vehicle stabilizer kit
  • Ropes
  • Cribbing
  • High pressure air bag system
  • Assortment of hand tools
  • Full complement of ground ladders
Another special feature is that the officer can turn on the diesel fueled generator from his seat in the cab while en route to a call.

Paramedic Unit
Ambulance #2 is a 2013 International built by MedTec. It is considered to be Type 1 or meaning it is equipped with Advanced Life Support. There is a 2007 International MedTec ambulance in reserve that is completely equipped which is utilized during call backs.

All equipment are colored red with a white stripe.

Specialized Apparatus
The District Chief's 2000 Chevy Suburban command unit is equipped with a laptop computer which is loaded with Command Scope, GPS, personnel tracking, six portable and vehicle radios, and ICS board. There are also one staff car and two utility trucks.

Fire Station #3
Niles Fire Department Station #3 is located at 6611 Jarvis Street.

Equipment

Station #3 is outfitted with two fire engines (one on reserve) and one paramedic unit.

Fire Engine #3
Engine #3 is a 2001 six-seat air conditioned Pierce Saber 1250 gallon per minute pumper with 500 gallons of water. It is also equipped with the Elkhart foam system with 30 gallons of class A foam, Hydraulic ladder rack, and ABS braking system, powered by Detroit 40-8 7-300E and a Allison MD-3060 transmission. All engines are equipped with a generator and lights. The engine is equipped with the following hoses:
  • 1000 feet of four inch hose in rear bed
  • 150 feet pre-connected hydrant line in the front
  • 200 feet of foam line
  • 1000 feet of 2 1/2 inch hose
  • Two 200 foot, 1 3/4 inch pre-connected attack lines
  • One booster reel
Reserve engine #3R is a 1996 six-seat Pierce 1250 gallon per minute pumper with a 500 gallon tank powered by a Detroit diesel with an Allison transmission. Both utilize the same hose arrangements as the front-line engines.

Ambulance #3 is a 2009 International built by MedTec. It is considered to be Type 1 or meaning it is equipped with Advanced Life Support. There is a 2007 International Med Tec ambulance in reserve that is completely equipped which is utilized during call backs.
