About the System
Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) is a radio wave-based system, for utility control and reliable, low-cost meter reading. The Meter Interface Unit (MIU) responds to a drive by data collector installed in a Niles Public Works vehicle and then delivers the meter reading to software installed on a PC at the Village of Niles. The Village has the ability to read for routine water billing or on demand for final reads or to monitor water usage. The radio system works without interfering with the customer's electronic device throughout their home. A simple three-wire hook-up from the encoded register provides input from the meters to the MIU.
Currently, all commercial properties in Niles are monitored with the AMR system. Residents with meters in difficult locations are converted to AMR on an as needed basis. For more information concerning the Village of Niles AMR system or to request AMR installation, please contact the Village of Niles Finance Department at 847-588-8030.
