Household hazardous waste requires special precautions when being disposed of. Here are some guidelines for the disposal of some common household items as well as suggested alternatives you can use:
- Aerosols: Put only empty cans in the trash and never burn or dispose of cans in a trash compactor. Use non-aerosol products as an alternative.
- Degreasers: Utilize the entire container or give it away. As an option, choose a strong detergent type over a solvent type.
- Motor Oil and Transmission Fluid: Recycle oil and transmission fluid at a neighborhood service station that accepts these items.
- Paint Strippers and Solvents: Let the item settle, and pour off cleaner for reuse. Pour sludge into a container and seal, or wrap in newspaper and throw in the trash. Sand the item, or use a heat gun, as an alternative to paint strippers.
