In Memoriam of Officer Steven Zourkas

The Niles Police Department experienced its most tragic day in department history on April 8, 2005. Police Officer Steven Zourkas was killed when he veered off the road to avoid striking a pedestrian. Officer Zourkas was responding to an officer assist call when he observed the pedestrian crossing the road.

Around 4 a.m., Officer Zourkas crossed the center line of the 8800 block of Golf Road when his squad rolled over in the parking lot of the Highland Towers condominium complex. Officer Zourkas died at the scene. He sacrificed his life to save the life of the pedestrian.

A Brief Look at Officer Zourkas' Success
He was an experienced evidence technician who loved working the midnight shift. Prior to his death, Officer Zourkas had been chosen to be an evidence technician for the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force (NORTAF). He was very happy that, after going through a rigorous interview process, he was selected to this elite squad; the entire department was proud of his success.

Officer Steven Zourkas will be missed by his fellow officers and by all those that he touched in his life. He is forever in our thoughts.
