Milwaukee Avenue serves as the backbone of Niles, traversing the entirety of the Village from southeast to northeast and serving as an important connection between Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. While Milwaukee Avenue has the potential to become a vibrant, mixed-use corridor, it currently faces a number of challenges to successful redevelopment. In 2014 the Village of Niles hired Camiros Inc. to create a plan for the future of the corridor. The end result was a bold vision that included alternative development scenarios, land use concepts, and specific corridor redevelopment recommendations for the 2.5 mile stretch of Milwaukee running from Albion to Monroe. The plan includes form based controls for new development, identifies key redevelopment sites, and details specific strategies for addressing roadway configuration, alignment and parking.
