Community Development 
is responsible for administering and enforcing building and property codes through the national codes adopted by ordinance by the Village of Niles. The responsibilities of the Building Department include licensing of contractors and performing all building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical inspections. In addition, all activities of the planning and zoning board of appeals are coordinated through the Community Development Department. The Business License Division licenses all new businesses including inspections, in addition to maintaining over 1300 current businesses. The Property Maintenance Division resolves complaints and code violations in addition to conducting annual rental unit inspections. Listing and transfer stamp inspections for property sales are also services that are provided to maintain the desirability of living in Niles. In conjunction with the Human Services Department, carbon monoxide and natural gas screening is offered to Niles homeowners. The Health Division provides inspection services for all food handling establishments in addition to regular monthly inspection to the eight nursing homes in the Village. Our business coordinator aggressively promotes the retention and expansion of existing businesses and industry within the Village.
